WHO SAYS TRUMP IS NOT A STUDENT OF HISTORY?
I just watched the last two episodes of “1968” on CNN. It is absolutely frightening, not only how much Trump is like Richard Nixon (only much, much worse) but also how very much alike Trump is to George Wallace as well.
A former Governor of Alabama, unabashed segregationist and bigot, Wallace ran as a 3rd party candidate in the 1968 election between Nixon and Humphrey. Wallace ended up getting 13.5% of the national vote – almost 10 million. He also won 5 states and 46 electoral votes. Wallace likely would have won even more votes had he not picked nuclear fruitcake Gen. Curtis Lemay as his running mate.
Watching Wallace at his rallies dealing with hecklers is exactly like listening to Trump whenever he is in front of his base.
1968 was such a turbulent, tragic year in so many respects. Yet it did end on a very positive, uplifting note when, on Christmas Eve, the Apollo 8 astronauts successfully circled the moon in a manned aircraft for the very first time. If even THAT year could end on a positive note …
We can only hope for a similarly upbeat ending to 2018.
With apologies to McDonalds, I think we all deserve a break.
