Bathroom Remodel

The second of our major remodeling projects for our New Mexico home took place in the fall of 2016.  We followed up the landscaping we had done to our backyard in 2015 with a remodel of both bathrooms.  We then completed the third project – a remodel of our kitchen/dining/living room area – in February of 2018.  There are now posts for all three projects located in this blog.

As with the kitchen area remodeling, the bathrooms were not in terrible shape by any stretch.  In fact, the decorative tile used on the sink areas (the same as originally used in the kitchen) was one of the features that initially attracted us to this home.  However, the rest of each bathroom was really quite dated.

The master bath had the old-style shower door enclosure which really served to make the space of the small bathroom seem even smaller.  We replaced that with 7′ high glass doors.  We replaced the cabinet area with new, white cabinets, a granite top, a new larger  mirror to also increase the feeling of space, and a new light fixture.  The effect was quite dramatic.  The space definitely feels a lot larger than it used to.

In the guest bathroom, we replaced the shower/tub plastic insert with an original tile design created by Deborah.  The tiles were installed by the contractor but it was done in a design they had never before attempted.  We feel that it turned out quite nicely.  We also installed glass shower doors in the guest bath as we did in the master bath.  However, since the guest bath is even smaller than the master bath, we installed two, separate folding glass doors.  When open, the entire space of the shower area is exposed.  That also makes the shower area more handicapped accessible.  Putting folding doors on each side was also something the contractor had not done previously.

The final touch we added to the guest bath area was to remove the old door and to enlarge the door opening to make the guest bath more handicapped accessible should the need arise.  Rather than replacing the door which would have decreased the space of the opening, we chose to order and install a sliding barn door.  That not only allowed the entrance to be as large as possible, given the space, it also added quite an attractive, unusual feature to our home.
