Quick Quips: “Defund the Police!” Uhhh. Really?

All that “defund the police” stuff we are now hearing is, I believe, just an easy slogan for a much more difficult issue.

When pressed, I don’t see any sane person say that we can completely replace the police and judicial system with so-called neighborhood policing.  The police and the justice system are far from perfect, but as they say, they are a damn sight better than anything in second place.

The emphasis should be on correcting the problems that exist – getting more community involvement in the process of officer selection, and also in changing the system so that bad officers are held responsible for their actions, and cannot just change locations and continue on as if nothing happened.

We always hear how the vast majority of police men and women are dedicated and do a thankless job with honor, nonetheless.  I believe that.  But at the same time, when one of their fellow officers is clearly wrong, the code of Blue Silence seems to override everything else.  That has to stop.  All those officers who quit that squad in Buffalo in support of those two guys who pushed that 75 year old down to the pavement are just more proof of the problem that exists.

All the talk shows now ask what is the current sexy question:

“Do you support the calls to defund the police?”

I am anxious to hear someone give a really thoughtful answer to the question, and not just pander to the call of a bumper sticker.
